Great to be welcoming London-based American composer and artist Tonia Ko to the Composers Edition family. Whether composing, creating sound installations or painting, Ko’s award-winning work is constantly evolving in its explorations of texture, movement and the relationship between melody and memory. Her instinctive and inquisitive approach yields works which are both freshly arresting and organic.
Ko’s music has been commissioned and performed by wide range of orchestras, ensembles and soloists including the Minnesota Orchestra, New York Youth Symphony, Los Angeles-based collective Wild Up, Spektral Quartet, percussion/ cello duo New Morse Code, oboist Olivier Stankiewicz, and Da Capo Chamber Players. A 2018 Guggenheim Fellowship recipient, she studied principally with Steven Stucky and Kevin Ernst.
“I am thrilled to join Composers Edition as I continue to establish a musical life in the UK. This new development feels like my official introduction to a wider, international community of contemporary music creators and fans. The first batch of works published here are some of my most recent, and demonstrate a slightly new direction in my work that I am excited to share with everyone. This is certainly a difficult moment for our field – but Dan’s model of flexibility and adaptability for CE makes me hopeful for vibrant times ahead!”Tonia Ko
An initial selection of works for Composers Edition includes the Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition / Grossman Ensemble commissioned Simple Fuel and mainly focusses on solo and chamber works for a range of forces including some with electronics. It includes her latest work Soothe a Tooth for viola, co-commissioned by Riot Ensemble and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.
We look forward to working with Tonia, publishing more of her works in the coming months and helping more musicians discover her wonderful compositions.
