Susannah Self’s new opera Artemisia will be premièred May 2020 by North Sea Opera at The Boat House, Burnham Overy Staithe, Norfolk on 29 and 30 May, St Edmunds College, Cambridge on 5 July and The Maltings Wells Next the Sea, Norfolk on 18 July.
The opera is inspired by the Renaissance painter Artemisia Gentileschi whose situation speaks directly to director Phyllida Lloyd’s conversation ‘about the dearth of great roles for women in opera’ (Saner, 2016: The Guardian). Artemisia’s historical residence in Venice interfaces with the parallel rise of convents as documented in Jonathan Glixon’s Mirrors of Heaven or Worldly Theaters? Venetian Nunneries and their Music (2018).
Self’s preliminary instrumental sketches Una Pittrice a Venezia were recorded by Birmingham Contemporary Music Group in spring 2019 and dedicated to Howard Skempton.
Una Pittrice a Venezia is proudly available at Composers Edition website alongside other works by Susannah Self.
