Susannah Self Joins Composers Edition

We’re very happy to announce that Susannah Self has joined Composers Edition. Self has composed 5 operas, many chamber and choral works and four symphonies. A successful solo singing career inspired Self to specialise in composing opera with commissions by The Birmingham Opera Company (Freedom Bridge), Téte a Téte ( The Boy from Brazil), The Garden Venture at The Royal Opera House (Heroic Women) and Musicatheatertage Festival in Vienna (The Butt). Self is especially interested in creating works which promote a large range of roles for women and incorporate soundscapes and installations to engage ear, eye and mind.

Self says about joining Composers Edition;

It’s a dream come true to have a publisher for my music. It feels like ‘coming home’ to join a body of such interesting composers some of whom have inspired and supported me through out my career such as Michael Finnissy and Paul Barker.

Future plans include three songs for counter tenor Patrick Terry, a Jette Parker young artist at The Royal Opera House, a new short work for Royal Birmingham Ballet and the opera Artemisia for 2020. This summer Self will perform in her new opera installation Analysis at The CODA Festival at The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire 19th June 2019.

Musically The Butt’s organic liquid vocal lines remind me of Britten. Composer Susannah Self conducted the performance with meticulousness.

The initial selection of works include two of her operas and seven further vocal pieces plus a range of chamber and ensemble works.
