Sonoro Release Martin Bussey Choral CD on Resonus

Martin Bussey

Founded in 2106 by Neil Ferris and Michael Higgins chamber choir Sonoro have already made a huge impression, garnering praise for their performances and recordings of both new and established repertoire. We’re delighted to see that they have now released a CD (their fourth release with Resonus) dedicated to the music of Martin Bussey.

Bussey has made a significant impact and contribution to the British music scene, both as a composer and choral director. Choral music has been at the heart of his musical life and on this disc Sonoro charts nearly forty years of his choral compositions, with works specially selected to suit their distinctive warm and resonant sound. The rich textures and harmonies of Martin Bussey’s writing are especially suited to Sonoro’s voices and his music blooms with the versatility of Sonoro’s singers. The works on this CD take their starting points from a wealth of written material which reflects Martin Bussey’s passion for texts. Martin said,

Some texts are religious, some are secular, but they all have a strong spiritual core and their words propel the music.  I find the texts in many different places, from reading or often in more unusual places while travelling, but they are all linked by a common theme: the overriding sense of the numinous – the presence of unseen mystical worlds.

In No Strange Land, released by Resonus

Many of the pieces on this disc were composed and commissioned with specific occasions or performing groups in mind, including the BBC Pilgrim Consort, Chester Bach Singers, the Oriel Singers (who commissioned the Three Motets), as well as local groups and church choirs.

The launch concert at 6.00pm St Botolph-without-Bishopsgate, London on Tuesday 5 November will feature a performance of a selection of works on the album, plus a short “Meet the composer” session with Martin Bussey, hosted by Sonoro’s co-artistic director Neil Ferris to illustrate the influences and inspirations behind the music being sung.

Composers Edition is proud to be publishing all of the works on this release:
