Silvina Milstein and Rob Keeley in a programme for two pianos

This Friday, Fiammetta Tarli and Ivo Varbanov will give the premiere of Silvina Milstein‘s ‘in a bowl of grey-blue leaves’ for two pianos in London’s St John’s Smith Square, followed by performances in Cambridge (11 June) and Bristol (15 June).
Inspired by Skryabin’s remark that his Tenth Sonata is a sonata of insects (‘insects are born from the sun…they are the sun’s kisses…, out of hushed expanses of trills and tremolos – as if brought about by the brush of a Chinese calligrapher’), splashes of ink break the primordial homogeneity of the silk-scroll to congeal transiently into interweaving melodic lines. In a bowl of grey-blue leaves is dedicated to Ivo Varbanov and Fiammetta Tarli who will be recording it for ICSM Records later this year.

Programme of all three performances also features Rob Keeley’s Fiestas for two pianos. Originally composed in 1995 as an orchestral piece for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Grant Llewelyn, the piece follows, according to the author’s words, a rather ‘celebratory overture’ tradition of Latin American-inspired works by composers such as Copland, Moncayo and Reveultas. An earlier version was first performed by Rob Keeley himself and Mary Dullea in Drumcliffe, Ireland in 2000.
