Composers Edition are very proud to announce the publication of Ryan Latimer’s Frigates & Folly, a major work for orchestra and chorus.

Frigates & Folly was commissioned by Crouch End Festival Chorus and performed by them with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Barbican Centre in Autumn of 2018, also broadcast on BBC Radio 3. The work and the premiere were then enthusiastically received by the performers, audiences and critics alike, making this a much anticipated release:

This 2018 work by Ryan Latimer, taking text from Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, is one of our most successful and enjoyable commissions. The words and music convey a wit rarely heard in choral music, allowing a performance that is fun for singers and audience alike.

Latimer has created an engaging and hugely enjoyable short piece. A jolly, spirited opening, plenty of novelty percussion and brass—even a spoken part delivered via megaphone. Well constructed and great fun.

David Winskill, The Islington Gazette

About the work, Latimer tells us;

Frigates & Folly is a tribute to the character Stubb from Herman Melville’s classic novel Moby-Dick. Whilst recognising the almost certain demise of his ship and all those aboard it, Stubb uses his tireless sense of humour, sarcastic quips and witty songs to help raise the spirits of his crewmates and occasionally mask his own fears and shortcomings. The selected texts used throughout this work hope to open a small window into the tragically optimistic life of the ship’s pipe smoking Second Mate. For me, Stubb offers more than simple comic relief and is a symbol of resilience, playfulness and joy in the face of all that is doom-fated.

In addition The Anatomy of Legerdemain for clarinet, violin, cello and piano, and Speaking of Letters and Dancing for soprano and small ensemble, have also been added to Ryan Latimer catalogue of works available via Composers Edition.
