Robert Peate ‘Two Souls in One’ World Premiere

Robert Peate

On Saturday 9 November Robert Peate’s new work Two Souls in One for two narrators, four harps, chorus and organ will be premiered at Holy Trinity Church, Whitecross, Hereford, featuring Hereford Chamber Choir, The Royal Academy of Music Harp Ensemble (Esther Beyer, Anwen Thomas, Nia Evans, Bianca Beng), narrators Tim Bannerman and Lizzie Brailsford, and organist Sam Bayliss, conducted by Simon Harper.

Two Souls in One is a musical narrative which weaves the life of the 5th century philosopher/mathematician Hypatia of Alexandria, who was brutally murdered by an early Christian mob; with the legend of Saint Katherine of Alexandria (of Catherine-wheel fame) – a legend which is seen as a Christian appropriation and reversal of Hypatia’s life. In interlacing these two narratives, a number of contemporaneous themes are highlighted such as feminism, globalisation, and religious fundamentalism.

Two Souls in One was commissioned by Hereford Chamber Choir with funds from the RVW Trust. This project is also being supported by the Elmely Foundation’s My Place Grant, and by the Royal Academy of Music.

A second performance of Two Souls in One is schedule to take place in London on Saturday 22 February, 2020 (details TBC).
