Last year Richard Pantcheff’s Nocturnus V – ‘Wind oor die Branders’ and Sonata for Piano were recorded for EM Records by the English pianist Duncan Honeybourne.
The Nocturnus V is a very short evocation of the wind over the sea (the subtitle is ‘Wind on the waves’ in Afrikaans). The piece was written in South Africa and was commissioned by two sisters there in celebration of their father’s 70th birthday. It is a characterful little sketch, inspired by watching the coastline of the Western Cape in South Africa.
The Sonata for Piano is a major work. Extremely taxing, it draws on some of the themes explored by the Greek Noble Laureate poet Odysseus Elytis in his epic poem ‘Ton Axion Esti’ of 1959. The sonata was written specially for Duncan Honeybourne, who gave the work a triumphant premiere in London in 2019.
Sonata for Piano is being released on the 18 June in the CD De Profundis Clamavi a two-disc recording of English piano music.
