We’re pleased to announce that composer and cellist Richard Birchall has joined Composers Edition with an initial selection of works focussing on the chamber string repertoire.
Birchall’s compositions and arrangements have been performed at the BBC Proms, Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall, The Purcell Room, The Sage Gateshead and throughout the UK, and have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM and French and German national radio. He has completed numerous transcriptions for Cellophony cello octet, and also produced commissioned arrangements for artists including Lawrence Power, the Doric Quartet, and the Tippett Quartet (Psycho Suite, subsequently released on the Signum label); also the London Cello Orchestra and the Ernest Read Symphony Orchestra. In recent years Birchall has turned increasingly to original composition. His piece Mirrors was written for Cellophony and premiered in the Park Lane Group series at the Purcell Room in January 2011; since then he has completed various works for chamber ensembles, following commissions by the Minerva Trio, the Piatti Quartet, and from individual artists. Recent works include Alice in Wonderland for eight cellos and narrator; Labyrinth for cello and chamber orchestra; Perhaps for soprano and orchestra, commissioned by De Montfort University; a second string quartet, Hands; and a set of miniatures for cello and harp.
Having spent the first part of my career predominantly as a performer, I am lucky to have developed friendships and working relationships with many wonderful musicians – and almost all of my works have been written with friends and colleagues in mind. Initially it was born of necessity, as a founder member of cello octet Cellophony: it was quickly apparent that not enough variety of repertoire was available for us to match the inherent appeal of such a group, and so during our decade performing together I developed our repertoire with five original pieces and some forty arrangements. I did eventually branch out from just cellos (!) with a pair of string quartets and various other chamber works, and a concerto Labyrinth for the Philharmonia’s Principal cellist Timothy Walden, and much of my current focus is on orchestral projects.
For a composer such as myself, Composers Edition provides a unique platform to broaden distribution, and to adapt to the rapidly changing business in which we work. I am absolutely delighted to be able to work alongside Composers Edition as my career progresses.
