Martin Bussey has a range of Christmas music available from CE. This ranges in difficulty from the simple carols such as Balulalow, written for a parish church choir, to more demanding works:
The Jesse Tree. SSTABB choir. Ideal for an experienced chamber choir or slightly larger group – it was commissioned by St George’s Singers of Poynton and its vibrant rhythms have proved popular in performances by diverse groups such as The Cosmo Singers of Manchester University, Chetham’s Chamber Choir and Chester Bach Singers.
Que se llamaba Maria SATB choir, and Del Nacimiento SSAATTTBB choir. Two settings in Spanish of poems by St John of the Cross, for the linguistically adventurous!
Song of the Nuns of Chester. SSAATTBB choir and organ. An atmospheric reworking of a plainsong lullaby.
Where is this stupendous stranger? SSATB choir and organ. Those looking for a more poetic text will enjoy this setting of Christopher Smart’s, with tinkling, frosty organ.
The Burning Babe. SS choir, soprano solo and organ. For confident upper voice groups this setting was composed for Manchester Cathedral, with Robert Southwell’s dramatic images of fire and heat portrayed by two-part choir and a significant organ part.
All these are available to hear on the Sonoro Choir recording of Martin’s choral music ‘In no strange land’, from Resonus Classics.
