Michael Cryne new work ‘Frost Flower’ premiere by The Laefer Quartet

On Friday 18th January 2019 The Laefer Quartet premieres Michael Cryne’s Frost Flower for saxophone quartet, a commission by the Park Lane Group especially for the ensemble.

Cryne took inspiration from nature for this new work, reflecting on the impact of humans on the planet, and how fragile and valuable the natural world is:

A Frost Flower is an amazing phenomenon that can happen on land or at sea. They’re pretty rare and beautiful, and occur when ice protrudes from a long-stemmed plant, forming ribbon-like ‘petals’, often layering on top of one another. I took the idea of overlapping ribbons and made it into a musical gesture – little cells of repeated pitches (all happening at different speeds) are laid on top of one another.

Michael Cryne also wanted to explore gentler dynamics in the saxophone quartet formation, doing ‘more with less’.

A catalogue of Michael Cryne’s works are available through Composers Edition website. Frost Flower, for saxophone quartet, will be published in due time after its premiere.
