The Breaking Wheel, Mark Bowden’s new work three-movement for clarinet and piano commissioned by the Little Missenden Festival, will be premiered by Mark Simpson and Richard Uttley at the Little Missenden Festival on Monday 16th October, who will then give a second performance at the Picture Gallery at Royal Holloway, University of London on Saturday 21st October, details here.
The work is inspired by 13th-century wall paintings discovered in 1931 at Little Missenden Church, which have recently been painstakingly restored. The paintings, in red and yellow ochre, allude to a different world including a striking series depicting the Life of St Catherine of Alexandria, one of the most important saints in the religious culture of the late Middle Ages. Taking place in the church, this promises to be a very special premiere. Find out more at the festival website.
