Michael Zev Gordon’s song cycle Baruch – Ten Propositions of Baruch Spinoza for tenor and piano has been nominated for the Ivors Composer Awards 2021 in the Vocal/Choral category.
This work was commissioned by the 2020 Oxford Lieder Festival, and premiered as a live-stream by James Gilchrist and Anna Tilbrook. Michael tells us about the experience of this nomination and gives us an insight on Baruch – Ten Propositions of Baruch Spinoza:
I’ve been really delighted to receive a nomination for the Ivors Composer Awards 2021 for my songs Baruch – Ten Propositions of Baruch Spinoza for tenor and piano. Such recognition feels even more welcome in these uncertain times. The work was commissioned by the Oxford Lieder Festival in 2020 and it was premiered by James Gilchrist, accompanied by Anna Tilbrook. I’ve known James’ singing since we were students at Cambridge together, and the purity and intensity of his expression was a source of great inspiration. The songs themselves are my response to some of the words and ideas of the Enlightenment philosopher Spinoza. Known for his fearsome logic, I was nevertheless drawn more to the poetic qualities of the opening statements in his arguments. Equally, though he is often viewed as an atheist, I am fascinated by how much he writes about the divine. A contemplation of his mystical-sounding idea of a ‘third kind of knowledge’ – through which to reach lasting peace – is how my cycle ends.Michael Zev Gordon
The Ivors Composer Award ceremony takes place at the British Museum on Wednesday 8 December and will be recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
Huge congratulations to Lynne Plowman and Michael Zev Gordon, and all fingers crossed!
