Liz Johnson ‘Gentle Flame’ Cantata 5-Star Review Ahead of Ex-Cathedra Christmas Tour

Liz Johnson’s Gentle Flame Cantata was premiered on Tuesday 12 November by Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Chamber Choir and Baroque Orchestra, conductor Jeffrey Skidmore, soloist Samantha Lewis at the Bradshaw Hall, Birmingham.

Composers Edition was delighted to hear this performance has received a 5-star review from Christopher Morley (Midlands Music Reviews).

And at the heart of this fascinating amalgam was the world premiere of Liz Johnson’s Gentle Flame Cantata, a passionate engagement with the Advent theme of knocking at the door. This is a constantly gripping work, its choral textures and devices always arresting and communicative.

From 4 to 23 December Liz Johnson’s carol Gentle Flame for SSAATTBB will be on tour with Ex Cathedra and Jeffrey Skidmore at various venues. The carol Gentle Flame was written in 2018, providing the initial spark for the Cantata. Gentle Flame is proudly available through Composers Edition alongside other works by Liz Johnson.
