Kevin Malone has just completed a new work for the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Sudden Memorials, a 30-minute work for solo piano will be premiered by Adam Swayne in London on Saturday 11 September, 1pm UK time, 20 years to the hour when the first attack occurred in New York.
The work is inspired by a photograph taken by Kevin during his 10-day visit to Shanksville, Pennsylvania in 2006 where he saw a makeshift wire fence with hundreds of spontaneous memorial offerings to the victims of United Airlines Flight 93 which crashed close to the fence. The American premiere will take place soon after in New York. Adam will play the work in Kosovo in Spring 2022 with a CD on the Coviello label being issued in time for the September premiere.
Also on 11 September, the Kosovo Philharmonic will perform Angels and Fireflies and Eighteen Minutes with Gregory Charette conducting and flute soloist Sussane Peters. Notices of other performances of Kevin’s 9/11 works are coming in, including a new recording by Matt Levy of Requiem 77 for tenor saxophone and air traffic controller on the XAS label.
Kevin Malone’s 9/11 works Angels and Fireflies, Eighteen Minutes, and Requiem 77 are proudly available for perusal and purchase through Composers Edition website in varied versions of instrumental formations. Sudden Memorials will be added to this catalogue in due course.
Kevin is Professor of Social and Autoethnographic Composition at the University of Manchester.
