When a Child is a Witness

requiem for refugees for mezzo-soprano solo, choir, children’s choir with chimes/bells, claves, tubular bell, violin solo, piano, organ and community groups

This piece brings different communities, cultures and artforms together within the framework of a Requiem Mass. Composed in response to the human tragedy of war and displacement, this work celebrates those who seek – and those who offer – refuge and hope.

When A Child Is A Witness – requiem for refugees – is created for the first performance in Coventry, one of the leading cities in the UK for the resettlement of refugees. The event is formed of a seamless patchwork of music lasting ninety minutes including a solo violinist, West African kora, spoken word, communal singing, instrumental interludes and other meditations/reflections called ‘Windows’ – inspired by the amazing windows of Coventry Cathedral.

The music includes traditional Middle Eastern transcriptions from David Fanshawe’s archive, folk melodies as well as Latin plainchants, all combined with other more contemporary music. The texts are excerpts from the Latin Requiem Mass and the Psalms, as well as new non-religious words written by the composer. The names of two refugees who have successfully found a safe haven are featured, in musical form: Malala Yousafzai and Lath Majid with his son Nour; and place names are also woven into the fabric of the music: Colwall, Aleppo and Coventry Cathedral.

String Quartet No.4

for two violins, viola and cello

Composed at the same time or soon after its predecessor, and after a long period during which I avoided the medium, this work is in three movements, two short ones followed by a longer, weightier third, entitled ‘In Memoriam’. A lot of people I cared about died during its composition, and I myself was seriously unwell at the time, but I hope that the ultimate impression of the music is positive and lifeenhancing, especially given the truism that the composers’ own emotional or physical state need not be reflected in the music itself.

Journeys (cello version)

for cello and piano

These solo pieces are a companion to Journeys, a piece for string orchestra written in response to the ongoing Refugee Crisis. As with the original piece, the three movements are presented as ‘acts’. The first Act is about leaving, the second about travel and the third arriving.

The pieces are based on ideas developed from themes in the orchestral piece. Musically, the entire piece is based on Arabic ‘scale’, Maqam Saba, which expresses sadness and pain and can also be related to armies and travelling from place to place. Rhythmic influences include the Syrian rhythm with eleven beats in a bar called ‘Fajir’ and an improvisatory melodic style.

Profits from these pieces will help support the work that international charities are doing to alleviate refugees suffering.

This work is also available with piano accompaniment for violin, viola and double bass.
