Joe Cutler‘s orchestra piece Awakenings is being featured in the closing concert of the 2017 Beijing Modern Music Festival, performed by the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Muhai Tang. The event takes place on Saturday 27th May. The piece was awarded 2nd prize in the 2000 Toru Takemistu Award for composition and has been previously performed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphonic Orchestra and BBC Symphony Orchestra. This is its first performance for over ten years.
This year’s Aldeburgh Festival will see the premiere of Joe Cutler’s new work called Song for Arthur, for counter-tenor and piano on Monday June 12th. The piece will be performed by Andrew Watts and Iain Burnside and is part of a new project called The Counter-Tenor Songbook, to be released on NMC Recordings. Other contributors include Michael Finnissy, Colin Matthews, Tansy Davies, Olga Neuwirth and Raymond Yiu. Joe’s piece is a setting of a newly commissioned text from writer Martin Riley.
