Ian Stephen’s children’s ballet for Northern Ballet, Pinocchio, opens on Tuesday 26 October 2021 at Leeds Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre, running until 29 October. The show then runs for another week in Leeds (7-11 December) before going on tour in Spring 2022.
Pinocchio is written for a quartet of clarinet doubling alto sax, viola, cello and piano. It is choreographed and directed by Gavin McCaig, with set design by Frankie Bradshaw. Ian has recently orchestrated it for Northern Ballet Sinfonia in preparation for recording and filming in November 2021. The orchestral recording will be conducted by Philip Ellis.
Ian Stephens’ string quartet, North Country, is given its premiere on 31 October 2021 3pm, by the Chapel Street Ensemble, Chapel Street Methodist Church, Chapel St, Penzance, Cornwall.
North Country is in three movements and lasts about 12 minutes. It was commissioned by the instrument maker Paul Bryant to celebrate the completion of a quartet of instruments. At Paul’s request the folk song ‘The Oak and the Ash’ is woven into each movement.
North Country is proudly available for perusal and purchase through Composers Edition website. We are looking forward to publishing Pinocchio in due course.
