Ian Stephens is currently writing a piece for the National Youth Brass Band of Wales and their conductor Philip Harper (of Cory Band fame). The piece is called Colston Falls and is inspired by the events of last month in Bristol when the statue of the slave trader Edward Colston was torn down by protesters, dragged to the harbour and thrown in.
This symbolic historic gesture struck a really strong chord with me. I studied in Bristol and know these places well, including the soon-to-be-renamed Colston Hall…
I’m writing a piece that casts this event into sound form and culminates in an off-centre rendition of the old Welsh tune Gwêl Yr Adeilad, which was the melody to which the first anti-slavery ballad in Welsh was written in the 1790s.Ian Stephens
The piece was commissioned for the NYBBW’s 2020 summer course, but Covid-19 has caused this to be cancelled, so it will probably be performed in 2021.
Composers Edition is proud to publish Ian Stephens music and is looking forward to publishing Colston Falls in due course.
