Composers Edition is pleased to announce that Spitalfields Music, a leading UK festival for over 40 years has commissioned Susannah Self to compose a work for violin, viola and piano for a lunchtime concert entitled, Fast Food, Fast Music to première in June 2020. The concert at Christchurch is to be curated by Errolyn Wallen MBE. Self tells us;
I am extremely excited about this commission because I have had a long interest in food as did my mother Penny Drinkwater – a food and wine writer.
As I create the new work to reflect fast food via fast music I will be compositionally drawing on my experience of creating delicious food quickly so that my composing days are not truncated! One of my favourite dishes is roast lamb stuffed with garlic and anchovies steamed in a beef bouillon. Serve with olive oil dusted butterfly wings (farfalle) pasta and strips of roasted red pepper. Make sure you pour the bouillon which has taken up the flavour of lamb, garlic and anchovies over the lamb and pasta! Also I will draw inspiration from Rossini an opera composer who like myself composed extrovert fast music and was renowned for his cooking.
We look forward to ‘tasting’ the results and sharing the recipe to this trio on Composers Edition in due course!
