Emma-Ruth Richards has been working on a new commission for the National Opera Studio project 12:42 – Twelve brand new arias, forty-two creative artists, two innovative films, produced in extraordinary times.
This project features twelve brand new commissioned opera arias from some of the most exciting composers and librettists working today. Each of the arias has been composed especially for the National Opera Studio’s Young Artist singers, who, along with their répétiteur, have been involved in the creative process since the outset. The arias are designed to demonstrate the individuality of each singer’s vocal talents, and will be used in their audition repertoire for years to come.
The young artist Emma-Ruth is working with is New Zealand soprano Eliza Boom and her répétiteur Bradley Wood. The aria is called Secure the Ghosts and has been created by Emma-Ruth’s longstanding collaborator and colleague Nic Chalmers.
This project is a National Opera Studio partnership with Second Movement, directed by David Sulkin and filmmaker Alisdair Kitchen.
The original production was intended to present those commissions in concerts in June but due to the COVID-19 crisis it was turned into a video project. Two videos will feature a compilation of the arias and a ‘making of’ documentary exploring the experiences of the Young Artists and Creative Teams in realising this project amid the global pandemic.
More information about the project including details of release will be announced soon.
