Emily Doolittle ‘Conversation’ Orkney Science Festival Premiere

Friday 7 September sees the premiere of Emily Doolittle’s Conversations, a setting for soprano and ensemble of Eleonore Schönmaier’s haunting poem of the same name by St Andrews New Music Ensemble as part of the Orkney International Science Festival.

Conversations is a 12-minute work for soprano and chamber ensemble, based on the sounds of grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) in haul-out.

I’ve been fascinated by grey seal howls since I first heard them on my first visit to Scotland in 2007 – their haunting mix of musicality and wildness, their sense of always being just out of reach.

Schönmaier’s poem explores what Doolittle describes as a “slightly uncanny sympathy between humans and grey seals”.

We look forward to making Conversations available in due course.
