Ed Bennett’s February News – ‘Famished’ Performance & Gaudeamus Mentorship

Ed Bennett’s new work, Famished, is a collaboration with the Irish poet Cherry Smith and singer Laura Kinsella. The work is based on Cherry Smith’s new book of poetry about the Irish famine and is funded by the Arts Councils of England and Northern Ireland.

On the 7th February, the three artists will give themselves the first performance of a live version of the work featuring spoken word and music. In the coming months there will be further London performances, followed by an extensive Irish tour.

‘The Famine reappears as a kind of displaced memory that haunts the afterlife of Irish culture, not directly but in images and tropes that form its traces.’
David Lloyd, Irish Times: Temporalities of Modernity, 2008

Later in the month, Ed will be mentoring the 25th Gaudeamus Young Composers Meeting in the Netherlands. Ed says:

This course holds a very special place in my heart having attended it myself as a student many moons ago, many of the relationships formed then still hold strong today. This one will be especially fun as my ensemble Decibel will be travelling to the Netherlands to give a special concert as part of the course and help celebrate this special 25th Anniversary.

Bon courage, Ed, and much success in your Winter ventures!
