Concert Details Fitzwilliam Quartet Ian Stephens Profile & Works
Our parents were gifted amateur musicians and we grew up in a house overflowing with the sounds of music making. Their influence was felt by the many visitors to pass through the doors. More than just enthusiastic players, they were facilitators – creators of music making opportunities, at all times and in any combination available to hand. They brought friends together, guided and encouraged young players, organised festivals, ran amateur orchestras, supported careers and opened eyes. In different ways, they were both slowly and relentlessly deprived of their joy of making music by illness. Our father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in his late 40s, our mother with Alzheimer’s Disease in her early 70s.
In their honour and memory, we have commissioned a quartet and clarinet quintet, inspired by pieces they particularly loved. It has been a privilege to work with Ian Stephens on this project and we are delighted to share these pieces with you during an event named after a house where we spent much of our childhood, and in so doing to raise money in support of others who are destined to lose their ability to enjoy their passions.
