James Erber’s guitar piece Am Grabe Memphis Minnies features on Diego Castro Magas’s new CD Knokler. This album is an independent production, funded by the Chilean government, released in Spring 2019. The CD also includes music by Christopher Fox and Wieland Hoban (the title track), as well as by younger Chilean composers.
The album has been very well received by both critics and listeners:
The second album from Chilean guitarist Diego Castro Magas presents some of the most thorny, technically dazzling contemporary pieces I’ve heard made for that instrument. After being mesmerized by his astonishing technique, it’s easy to understand why a composer would relish the opportunity.
James Erber’s “Am Grabe Memphis Minnie” is partly an homage to the titular blues guitarist, abstracting some of the techniques of the pre-war era and melding them with modern ideas, like harmonics. I can’t help but think of Magas as the Derek Bailey of contemporary music. (Peter Margasak, at Best of Bandcamp Contemporary Classical: June 2019)
