Andrew Lewis’ new work Lebenslieder, for chamber ensemble and electronics, will be premiered in Bangor, North Wales on 19th March. The work fuses instrumental music with extracts from interviews with people with dementia, and their partners who care for them.
The three movements of Lebenslieder will be premiered by an ensemble of thirteen musicians, including musicians from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, as part of the ‘Songs from Afar’ event. Along with the music, Welsh broadcaster Beti George will be in conversation with a series of special guests, including people with dementia, carers, researchers and some of those whose voices are heard in the pieces. With comments and questions from the audience, this will be an inspiring evening of music and conversation, exploring the highs and lows of living well with dementia. The aim is to break the silence that often surrounds the topic, giving voice to the real-life, day-to-day experience of what is fast becoming the defining medical condition of our age.
