Christopher Fox’s Sea Poppies will be performed by the flautist Emi Ferguson and soprano Ah Young Hong on Saturday 12 June in the Christopher Cairns Studio, Havertown, Pennsylvania, USA.
Sea Poppies is a setting of fragments of a poem by H.D. (1886-1961). ‘H.D.’ was the pen-name of Hilda Doolittle, who grew up only two miles from the venue for this concert. I wrote Sea Poppies in the late-summer of 2020, originally as a tiny concert aria, but since then it has become the third part of sweet and salt, a cycle of nine movements for soprano and ensemble (flute, percussion, electric guitar, viola and double bass) that the Riot Ensemble have commissioned.

Both the complete cycle (titled sweet and salt) and this single movement Sea Poppies will be published with Composers Edition in due course.
