We’re pleased to announce this commission for James Gardner to write a substantial concerto for the Los Angeles Percussion Quartet and the forces of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. The premiere will take place in September 2019. We asked James about preparations:
Obviously it’s very early days as far as writing the piece is concerned, but I’m keen to draw on two aspects of the LAPQ’s playing: First, their extraordinary finesse and sensitivity, as demonstrated in the many nuanced, lyrical performances on their album Beyond – particularly in the pieces by Anna Thorvaldsdottir and Andrew McIntosh. Second, their tight, precise ensemble in pulse-based music.
I’m looking forward to working with the members of this versatile and virtuosic quartet – in person, in the case of my University of Canterbury colleague Justin DeHart, and via Skype sessions – over the coming months as the piece evolves.
Described by the New York Times as “mesmerizing”, the GRAMMY Award nominated Los Angeles Percussion Quartet are marking this debut with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra with this commission.Concert Details James Gardner Profile & Works
