Catherine Kontz Large-Scale Work Première & RCM Professorship

UGDA-Into-the-Wild

Catherine Kontz’s large-scale promenade concert (about 1 hour in total) will be premiered in Luxembourg on Saturday 27 November at 11am and 2pm. The title of this work, Driwwer Drënner Drop means above, below, on top – referring to the Bridges and different levels found in the old fortress town of Luxembourg around which the performance will take place. This is a commission from Philharmonie Luxembourg as part of the Rainy Days festival. As Catherine herself says to Luxembourgers;

It is happening! With “Pauken und Trompeten” – in the best way possible! I have created a new promenade piece for you – a live music walk! For Driwwer Drënner Drop over 140 UGDA‘s young musicians will bring their flutes, saxophones, trumpets, sousaphones, drums and voices and bounce their sound off the old fortress walls. A happening promenade with 7 micro-concerts along the way around the bridges of the old town in Luxembourg – from the Clausener Breck to Neimenster.

Suitable for everyone, it’s a free event (but check the website for booking/COVID regulations).

Catherine has also been commissioned to compose a new large-scale work Voix des Terres Rouges for large orchestra and choir by Orchestre National de Metz with the choirs of INECC Lorraine and Luxembourg as part of Esch 2022 European Capital of Culture. The chorus formed for the occasion will start rehearsals this month in view of the triple premier in June 2022 in Metz/Villrupt/Luxembourg. The story told through the piece is the story of the people of the mining region in the South of Luxembourg, Esch/Alzette with its surroundings and Catherine tell us that while researching;

I stumbled upon an interview and portrait of my great great grandmother, Catherine Rousseau, who was the eldest living Esch-citizen in 1956 when the town celebrated 50 years. Author Carla Lucarelli has woven Catherine Rousseau into the fabric of the text like a wondrous character in a story, and thus, it very much feels like I got to meet my great great grandmother on the way, in and between the lines. Carla’s texts are complemented by a selection of writings of author Gilles Ortlieb, who ponders this now post-industrial region in his own poetic way. A setting of a Latin text by Armand D’Angour completes the story of this adventure through time and music. I can’t quite tell you how excited I am about this, my largest piece since my opera Neige. Mark the dates for the premier in your diary now (17, 18 and 19 June 2022).

There is still time to sign up to sing in the choir (INECC Mission Voix Lorraine) and take part in the creation of this piece with a large professional orchestra.

And we are thrilled with the news that Catherine Kontz has been appointed Professor of Composition at the Royal College of Music! Huge congratulations! Come study with Catherine there and be inspired to reach higher and look further!
