Thursday 2 May, Birmingham Record Company Day launches an exciting partnership with the internationally acclaimed NMC Recordings with a special one-day festival. A packed day of events at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire includes a lunchtime performance by Ed Bennett (electronics) and pianist Xenia Pestova of Bennett’s Out of Nowhere which draws on material from the traditional Irish air Pórt Na BPúcaí (known in English as Song of the Fairies), a ghostly and beautiful tune believed to have originated in the Blasket Islands off the remote South West coast of Ireland. The afternoon brings the inaugural cohort of NEXT musicians joining the Thallein Ensemble for a programme of new and recent works including Kirsty Devaney’s Root and Joe Cutler’s Slippery Music. The concert is being recorded for BBC Radio 3’s New Music Show.
