Anthony Gilbert ‘Kettle of Fish’ Musical Memoirs

Anthony Gilbert’s musical memoirs has just been published! Under the title Kettle of Fish (which is part of the metaphor some critics have used to describe his music in the past), the memoir covers Anthony’s childhood and study years and then focuses on his journey as a composer through the subsequent 60 years.

An essential part of my philosophy is ‘looking outwards’. [My music] explores a range of non-European ideas and cultures, as well as those of, particularly, France and Spain. I grew up a polyglot, and see no reason to shut the doors which that background opened to me: a background to a vast and rich ‘other’ landscape.

Anthony Gilbert

Since the 1960’s when a series of virtuoso works for small ensembles attracted public attention, Anthony Gilbert’s music has been commissioned, performed and recorded by many very finest artists including Jane’s Mistrels, Goldberg Ensemble, London Sinfonietta, BBC Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras, CBSO, Psappha, Manchester Camerata and the Arditti Quartet. Fruitful ongoing relationships include conductors Clark Rundell and Nicholas Ward, pianists Richard Casey and Peter Lawson and the recorder player John Turner.

Current orchestral projects waiting performance are Lifelines – a 10-minute tone-poem dedicated to conductor Clark Rundell, and Liaisona work to celebrate Manchester and dedicated to Timothy Reynish.

Anthony Gilbert has also played an essential role in the promotion of performances of new music. He was on the committees of the Society for the Promotion of New Music, the ICA Music Section, the British and Sydney Sections of the ISCM and the New Music Panel of North West Arts for several long periods. Anthony Gilbert was also Founder Member, Chairman and Artistic Director of New Music Forum, Manchester, and Founder and Artistic Director of AKANTHOS, the new music ensemble of the RNCM.

This should be an excellent read an a mandatory immersion into the life and work of Anthony Gilbert.

Copies of the book can be ordered by emailing Anthony Gilbert directly on gilbertcomp[at]btinternet.com.
