Selections from Anne LeBaron’s new chamber opera This Lingering Life will be performed on 15 and 16 May by West Edge Opera as part of their Snapshot series at the Bruns amphitheater near Berkeley, California. Jonathan Khuner will lead the singers and the San Francisco Bay Area-based ensemble Earplay, featuring Aléxa Anderson as The Princess.
The libretto by Mark Campbell and Chiori Miyagawa leaps deftly across cultures, place and time to connect disparate people looking for meaning in their lives: A woman with tragic hair wanders for centuries seeking the reasons for her fate; a young warrior dies and dies again; an unhinged woman searches for her lost son; two lovers reconnect across the Milky Way; and an old gardener foolishly falls in love with a princess. The ultimate message is that the deeds we do in our lives—good or bad—extend beyond the lengths of our lives and the limits of our geography.
The Guest House, the first selection from Radiant Depth Unfolded – settings of Rumi, will be performed in a dramatic realization on three dates in mid-May by Chelsea Fingal DeSouza – soprano, CodyRay Caho – baritone, Michael Lewis – pianist, Ellen Jackson – director:
