– POSTPONED! –
On Saturday 25 June Andrew Toovey’s new part-song, as and when, will be workshopped with tutors Sarah Leonard and Janet Oates at The Old Diorama Arts Centre, London NW1 3FE.
This is part of CoMa (Contemporary Music for All) event Singing Adventures: a day of dramas.
as and when – is a collection of settings of poetry by Paul Driver. I wanted to explore these poems in varied ways so that the sense and meaning can be understood in many different ways. This collection of poems are mainly related to queer experiences and sensibility and can be directly spoken, melodically and rhythmically articulated – in solo, unison, duet, trio quartet/SATB and multi-part settings. All parts can be sung in any octave. And the poetry settings can be sung in any order and combined in as many ways as you can imagine – repeated, sung simultaneously.
The openness of the structure of as and when allows many interpretations. I want the piece to capture the open spirit of the poems and have random, multi-textual and chance encounters between the material, both musical and poetic. The poems are also provided as a libretto so that they can be spoken, recited, multi-layered and dispersed throughout the performance.Andrew Toovey
