The Pelleas Ensemble was formed at the Guildhall School of Music in 2011 and comprises Henry Roberts (flute), Luba Tunnicliffe (viola) and Oliver Wass (harp). They are Tunnell Trust Young Artists and recently won the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Henderson Chamber Ensemble Award as well as the 2017 Elias Fawcett Award for Outstanding Chamber Ensemble at the Royal Overseas League competition.

Stephen says he relished the opportunity to write the harp trio, not only because of its technical challenges but also because of the outstanding musicality of this exciting young ensemble. The work is shortly to be available via Composers Edition.

Stephen Roberts has recently returned from a successful trip to the USA, which featured a series of premieres for narrator and chamber ensemble at the newly formed Guliford Festival in Connecticut, New England. The pieces, with words by the composer, are designed for youngsters of all ages and revisit Aesop’s fables and other tales from different countries, including China, Hungary and the USA. They will be available on CE soon. The film and stage actor Steve Routman narrated the composer’s scripts and is seen here with Stephen Roberts.

During the trip Stephen visited Yale University to run through a selection of his works with the Yale Wind Band, including his new piece for concert band The Snaring of the Sun. This week the original brass version (written for the National Youth Brass Band of New Zealand) was announced as the set piece for the March/April 2018 Australian National Brass Band Championships to be held in Melbourne.

Stephen has also just finished an extensive new work for Brass & Organ, Triptych, to be premiered by the Birmingham Symphonic Brass at the Bramall Concert Hall, University of Birmingham on 10th March 2018. He is now working on a piece for solo viola and strings for first performance on the 18th March by the Orchestra Pro Anima.
