New York based Lost Dog Music Ensemble will be staging a concert series (January 12 & 13) celebrating contemporary music from the UK and open with works by Composers Edition’s Philip Cashian and Mark Bowden.
As Artistic Director Garth Edwin Sunderland told Composers Edition “It was actually encountering Mark Bowden’s music on his NMC disc that got me thinking more about music from the UK. It’s actually quite rare to encounter UK composers (who aren’t named Thomas Ades) on US new music programs. That struck me as a strange blind spot, given how much cultural exchange there is otherwise between our two countries.” In exploring further he “encountered so many great composers that were new to me, like Mark, and Philip Cashian” and dived deeper into composers whose names he knew but whose music heI didn’t know well, such as Julian Anderson and Colin Mathews.
Having discovered so much great music that’s either unknown or under-represented in the US, Lost Dog Ensemble wanted to do something that would bring these composers greater attention – which led to this Festival. “It’s our hope that ‘The UK Commotion!’ will make some noise to help to raise the profiles of these incredibly diverse, talented, and creative UK composers.”
We wish Garth and his ensemble the very best for this new venture and hope it’s success might lead to further explorations of the Composers Edition Catalogue!
