Joe Cutler Symphony Orchestral Premiere

Joe Cutler’s first work for symphony orchestra in over ten years Elsewhereness will be premiered by the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra on Sunday March 11th as part of the official Royal Opening Gala Concert celebrating the opening of the new Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. The concert will be conducted by CBSO’s recently appointed Chief Conductor Mirga Gražinyté-Tyla. The piece was composed with the support of an award from the Composers Fund, supported by the PRS Foundation and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

Joe says:

“I began Elsewhereness whilst still working in the old Birmingham Conservatoire building which was gradually being dismantled, just as the new building was rising from its foundations. Birmingham is a city that always seems to be in a state of flux, with new buildings going up and old ones disappearing or morphing into something different. Over the last year, whilst working on the piece,  I experienced a heightened awareness of the imperminence of the cities we construct; how what appears solid and familiar, over time re-configurs itself into something new. It’s rather like when a new building is created, one enters into a negotiation with time, and that of course is rather similar to the process of composition. That’s something I wanted to explore in this new work”.
