Daniel Saleeb: chamber opera “Occō’s Eternal Act” to premiere at Milton Court tonight

Daniel Saleeb’s chamber opera “Occō’s Eternal Act” written in collaboration with writer Oge Nwosu will receive its premiere tonight at 7pm at the Barbican’s Milton Court Studio. This performance is the first of many that continue twice a day until 10th July as part of Opera Makers- a Guildhall School singers and repetiteurs perform new works written by Guildhall by composers and librettists on the School’s MA in Opera Making & Writing programme, including CE’s Daniel Saleeb.

‘Occō is trapped in a Purgatorial space peopled with four significant characters from his life. He can’t escape them so he makes them perform, over and over again, for his imaginary audience,‘ reveals the composer whose work will also be performed at this year’s BBC Proms.
The piece is for five singers (Occō: Bertie Watson; Woman: Georgia Mae Bishop; Man: Daniel Mullaney; Boy 1: Chloe Latchmore; Boy 2: Emily Kyte), and eight players (flute [dbl. picc.]; clarinet [dbl. bass clarinet]; guitar; piano; 1 perc.; violin, cello, double bass) with some electronics (tape).
“The whole thing is a culmination of a year’s work on the Guildhall’s MA in Opera Making & Writing, so we’ve had the chance to work quite closely with the whole company over an extended period of time. I’ve worked especially closely with Bertie, who plays Occō, which is a very demanding role (musically and psychologically!) — his performance is very exciting indeed, and the rest of the company, too — singers, instrumentalists and design/tech team — astoundingly mostly student work, it’s a really great show.”
