Daniel Saleeb at BBC Proms 2017

Organists William Whitehead and Robert Quinney launch BBC Proms’ Reformation Day on Sunday, 20 August 2017 at the Royal Albert Hall with a recital featuring the great Lutheran chorale preludes of Bach’s Orgelbüchlein at its heart, alongside three brand-new chorale preludes by British composers including the world premiere of Daniel Saleeb‘s  ‘Erhalt uns, Herr bei deinem Wort’ and his toccata on the same text.

You can obtain more information about the programme as well as book your tickets here (on sale from Saturday 13 May).

The work was written for William Whitehead’s Orgelbüchlein Project, a major international composition project to complete the 118 missing pieces of JS Bach’s Orgelbüchlein (Little Organ Book) manuscript with new compositions based on his intended melody. Commissioned by the London Festival of Contemporary Church Music, the piece was first performed by William Whitehead at the Chapel of Lincoln’s Inn, and has since received performances by James McVinnie at the Chapel of St. John’s College, Cambridge, St. John’s Smith Square, and on BBC Radio 3 from St. Paul’s Knightsbridge. ‘Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort’ is a wordless setting of the associated chorale text, described as wild, dramatic-rhetorical, followed by octatonic whirlwind, finally coming to becalmed exposition of chorale melody. And Difficulty level: 5.

Find out what the composer himself has to say about the piece or have a closer look below.
