Last week saw a premiere of Gorilla and Orange Sun, Ryan Latimer’s new piece commissioned for the 25th anniversary of Birmingham Symphony Hall and written for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
John Allison reviewed the piece, inspired by the work of the children’s author and illustrator Anthony Browne, for The Telegraph: “The 25-year-old composer (and Birmingham Conservatoire graduate) served up a perfectly judged piece full of chunky, colourful effects. From a striding start it was never over-scored, though, and the Gershwinesque syncopations all registered vividly.”
Ryan Latimer’s Antiarkie, written for the BBC Symphony Orchestra, will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s Hear and Now on Saturday 30 April 2016. Next month, the London-based composer will be recording with the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra in the Czech Republic for a new CD, released later this year.
Scores for both Gorilla and Orange Sun and Antiarkie will be available shortly on Composers Edition.
