Liz Lane joins Composers Edition

Described as ‘brilliant’, ‘stunning’, ‘evocative’ and ‘fabulous’, Liz Lane’s style is frequently melodic but seldom predictable, with an appeal that enables her to write for performers of all abilities, diverse occasions and, more recently, music for brass band and an increasing number of community and outreach projects. Composers Edition is delighted to publish an initial selection of 10 works including vocal, choral, piano, chamber, and ensemble compositions. We hope you enjoy delving into Liz Lane’s musical delights and look forward to bringing more of her music to wider attention.

Liz Lane started composing at an early age and received widespread media coverage as a child composer, including an ITV television documentary And I Write Music and a televised performance by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Her compositions have been performed in major concert halls and venues throughout the UK and abroad, with commissions encompassing orchestral, choral, ensemble, wind band and brass band genres. Alongside her composing work, she is a Senior Lecturer at the University of the West of England where her research includes working with OpenUp Music.

A newly arranged version of Silver Rose composed by Liz Lane, commissioned by Bristol 2014 with Arts Council England funding, was performed at Bristol Cathedral last Saturday 16 April 2016. This featured the first performance by the South-West Open Youth Orchestra, the UK’s only disabled-led regional youth orchestra (OpenUp Music), who joined Lydbrook Band, University of the West of England Singers and Alison Howell (organ), conducted by Ian Holmes.

The moving 12-minute work commemorates the start of the First World War, and features poems by Bristol-born war poet, Isaac Rosenberg narrated by actor Barry Farrimond (who plays Ed Grundy in BBC Radio 4 The Archers). Many of the instruments the Youth Orchestra were using, have been specially developed and adapted for use by each individual musician by OpenUp Music. The instruments are able to transform any physical movement, including movements of the head or even the eyes into distinct notes.

On Saturday 23 April 2016, The Open University Choir will give a performance of Liz Lane’s Antiphonary for brass band in a concert celebrating the restoration of Father Willis organ at St Mary and St Giles Church, Stony Stratford. The organist will be Paul Daggett. Proceeds from this concert will go towards casework and maintenance of the Willis pipe organ. More information here.
